Sophomores Unite To Fight Type 1 Diabetes

A bake sale was held on April 4 to increase awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and raise money for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). Matthew Weksler ’16 and Jesse Rosenberg ’16, who organized and ran the bake sale, became involved in this cause after Jesse’s identical twin brother Jake was diagnosed in 2012. While Jesse and his family have been hosting fundraisers for DRI the past two years, he and Matt want D-E to be involved and inform their classmates of the differences between Type 1 Diabetes and Type II Diabetes. Type I Diabetes is not caused by overeating or having unhealthy food, but by an autoimmune disease that attacks the pancreas. In Type 1 Diabetes, the body does not produce insulin, the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy lives, but more research is needed to conquer this dangerous condition.

Joe Lombardi ’16, Noah Erni ’16 and Kyle Langweil ’16 also volunteered to help out at the bake sale, which served as a prelude to the “Spin-a-Thon” on May 4 that will also benefit DRI's Type 1 Diabetes Research. This off-campus event will be held at The Gym in Englewood, whose spinning facilities have been made available just for this event. Participants can reserve a spinning bike in advance with a donation of $20 or more.

Because there is so much work to be done and funds to be raised, volunteers are always welcome. Have a new idea? Want to participate in the Spin-A-Thon? Contact Matt at wekslm1@d-e.org or Jesse at rosenj1@d-e.org.
