2014 Bulldog Classic Raises $122,348!

$122,348 was the magic number for this year’s edition of the Bulldog Classic, D-E’s annual special event whose net proceeds support our Student Financial Aid Fund. Presented by The Grace & Mercy Foundation, the 18th annual Classic took place on Monday, September 29 at Alpine Country Club in Demarest.

New to the Bulldog Classic was an A.M. yoga class, which had 21 participants, in addition to the usual morning of tennis (16 players) and afternoon golf (80 golfers), followed by an evening of cocktails and dinner with a Live Auction - which itself raised $48,000! Auction items included an in-home visit from a Rao’s chef preparing dinner for ten; sports tickets with sideline passes for two; the opportunity for a child and friend to be Nickelodeon President for a day; 2015 VIP Graduation Seats; Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club golf packages; and a theater and backstage tour to Carole King's "Beautiful.”

At dinner, Bulldog Classic keynote speaker Sean Larry Stevens '06 delivered a powerful message on how D-E ignited his passion for education, which began with a reluctant start at D-E (since he had to repeat his freshman year). He then persevered through a grueling four years at Cornell University, only to obtain his MA in Education at Georgetown University. He is now currently pursuing his PhD at Columbia University - all while becoming an author, founder of Democracy Prep Charter Middle School, and CEO/Founder of Formula 22, Inc. a non-profit mentorship program. After opening with one of his original poems featured in his first book, “UnSeen Thoughts,” Stevens ended his speech by thanking the attendees for their efforts in supporting financial aid at D-E: “I am honored to stand in front of some of the individuals who made it possible for me to get an excellent education that ALL children deserve. You are the world changers that continually invest in the minds of children, that contribute to a cause greater than yourselves, and that give access to the doorway of opportunity by providing the gift of education. Thank you for your generosity of spirit, and I hope that you continue to send students like myself to great schools and universities.”
