"This is a huge honor, a recognition on a national level," said Calliope faculty advisor and Middle-Upper School librarian Steve Petkus. "It is only the fourth time in our school's history (and in Calliope's history, stretching back to the 1950's) that we have received a Crown award. The previous wins for Calliope came in 1982 (Gold), 1993 (Silver), and 2011 (Silver).
"Receiving this award puts us in elite company: out of thousands of publications considered by the CSPA from scholastic and collegiate entrants, only 52 magazines received a Crown. We will find out [March 20, 2015, at the CSPA 91st Spring Convention] whether we received a Gold or a Silver Crown when I attend (along with, hopefully, the 2014 issue's editors) the awards ceremony at Columbia [University].
"Calliope 2014's editors were Alana Solin '14, Kira Tsougarakis '14, and Carly Wolfer '14. The current Calliope editors - Savannah DiGiovanni '16, Wendy Gonzalez '15, and Lisa Mordkovich '15 - also had a strong hand in shaping the award-winning issue last spring, so they especially share in this honor as well. And it goes without saying that all students past and present who contributed pieces appearing in the magazine, whether Calliope club members or not, deserve big congrats."
Prior to emailing the entire Upper School the good news, Mr. Petkus had notified the English and Visual Arts faculty and thanked them for "their nurturing of our young writers and artists, [which] lies at the heart of this great success."
As previously reported in October by Mr. Petkus, Calliope 2014 "garnered the highest score in recent memory - 926 out of 1,000 possible."
So now we wait until the spring to find out which Crown Calliope 2014 has won. Until then, congratulations again to the talented Calliope 2014 crew!
