2016 Commencement & Reunion Celebrated

The Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) community will celebrate Commencement for the Class of 2016 on Sunday, June 5.  108 students will be awarded diplomas by Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett, Upper School Principal Joseph Algrant, and Board of Trustees President Matt Golub. The ceremony is at 10:00 a.m. at Leggett Field on the D-E campus.

The 2016 Commencement Keynote Speaker is D-E alumnus Jonathan Granoff, ESB '66.  A lawyer, screenwriter, and lecturer, Granoff is the President of the Global Security Institute (http://gsinstitute.org/).  An organization founded by former California Senator Alan Cranston, GSI has a board of advisors that includes Jane Goodall, Mickhail Gorbachev, and the Mayor of Hiroshima City in Japan. The mission of the GSI to “achieve incremental steps that enhance security and lead to the global elimination of nuclear weapons.”  

A highly dedicated peace and self-described "busy" activist, Granoff's myriad roles including serving as a senior advisor of the American Bar Association's Committee on Arms Control and National Security, and he has served as Vice President of the NGO Committee on Disarmament at the United Nations.  He is on numerous governing and advisory boards including the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, the Lawyers Alliance for World Security, the Jane Goodall Institute, the Bipartisan Security Group, and the Middle Powers Initiative.  Granoff has lectured worldwide on the legal, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of human development and security with a specific focus on the threats posed by nuclear weapons. He is also the award-winning screenwriter of The Constitution: The Document that Created a Nation, and has articles in more than 50 publications and books including: The Sovereignty RevolutionToward a Nuclear Weapons Free WorldImagining TomorrowAnalyzing Moral IssuesPerspectives on 911Toward a World In BalanceReverence for Life Revisited, and Hold Hope, Wage Peace.

Granoff has been a featured guest and expert commentator on hundreds of radio and television programs, including Dr. Deepak Chopra's critically-acclaimed program One World;  he has testified in Congress and at the UN numerous times and has, since 2003, addressed the annual Nobel Peace Laureate Summit in Paris and Rome.  In 2009 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Rutgers University School of Law, from which he received his J.D. following his B.A. from Vassar College.  Granoff has practiced law in Philadelphia as an individual practitioner, in several medium-sized firms, and as in-house counsel in a public company.  He has represented the International Peace Bureau, a Nobel Peace Laureate organization.   Earlier this year he was the honored keynoter at the UN's first International Day of Yoga, in which he practiced asanas, or postures, with the UN Secretary General.  For these and his many activities on behalf of peace and the removal of nuclear weapons from our world, Granoff was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.  This weekend he is one of two alumni being recognized by D-E as the recipient of the School's highest award for alumni:  The Distinguished Alumni Award.  

During Commencement, three students from the Class of 2016 will also be announced and recognized with the School’s most prestigious awards: The Bailey Award; The Senior Citizenship Prize; and The Trustees’ Award. Alumni from the Dwight School for Girls, the Englewood School for Boys (ESB), and the Dwight-Englewood School will also gather during the celebratory weekend for 50th and other milestone reunion years and in order to honor select alumni. On Saturday, June 4, the 2016 D-E Distinguished Alumni Award, honoring exemplary professional and/or volunteer accomplishments, will be presented to both Jonathan Granoff (see above) and exclusionary law expert and law professor Tracey Maclin '76

The Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 1997 to pay special tribute to alumni of the Dwight School, the Englewood School for Boys, and the Dwight-Englewood School. The award is presented for exemplary professional and/or volunteer accomplishments. It honors alumni whose achievements deserve special recognition by the school and by fellow graduates.

Tracey Maclin '76
Tracey Maclin is the 1995 recipient of the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, Boston University's highest teaching award.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities at BU School of Law, Maclin has held visiting professorships at the law schools of Harvard and Cornell Universities.  He also has served as counsel of record for the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), and the Cato Institute in a number of US Supreme Court cases addressing Fourth Amendment issues.  Most recently, he was the author of an amicus brief representing the Cato Institute and NACDL in Hudson v. Michigan. In the early part of his career Maclin served as a law clerk to Judge Boyce Martin, Jr., of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.  He was then associated with the New York law firm of Cahill, Gordon and Reindel and taught at the University of Kentucky College of Law before joining the faculty of BU.  Maclin received his BA from Tufts University and earned his JD from Columbia University School of Law.  
 
Alumni Joseph Murphy III '91 and Andrea Palacios Arangruen '01 will also be honored during the Reunion festivities, with induction into D-E’s Athletic Hall of Fame. The D-E Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1996 to honor those individuals who have achieved a high level of success during their careers as student athletes and coaches, or through significant contributions to the school’s athletic program. Its purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those who have brought distinction and excellence to the Dwight School, the Englewood School for Boys, and the Dwight-Englewood School.

Joseph Murphy III '91 
Joseph Murphy earned a total of 10 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse from 1987 to 1991, and he captained all three teams at various points during his time at D-E.  Breaking the single season scoring record with 24 soccer goals in 1988, Murphy went on to play for the team that won the State Championship in 1989.  In lacrosse he led all New Jersey lacrosse players in the category of assists and was within the top 25 in points scored in 1991.  Murphy's accomplishments included numerous all-league, all-county, and all-state awards, and he received D-E's Charles Hardy Award when he graduated.  He went on to play varsity soccer for Lehigh University from 1991 to 1994.  Most recently Joe competed in the 2016 Lake Placid Ironman Triathlon.  Murphy currently is a Director for Barclay's Capital in New York, NY. 

Andrea Palacios Aranguren '01
Andrea Aranguren achieved more than 10 varsity letters in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse from 1997 to 2001.  She was the recipient of numerous honors throughout her career as a D-E athlete, including the Silberfein Award (1998 and 2000); the Boiling Award (2000); and the Ann Hardy Award (2001).  She served as captain for the field hockey and lacrosse teams.  After graduating from D-E, Aranguren earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Columbia University.  She is currently a Vice President for Markit, which deals with environmental services.
