Fourth Grade


Fourth graders are extremely busy! They are busy with new experiences, learning, friendships and relationships.  But do not be fooled by how old they look and act: fourth graders will still organize a pretend game with a group of friends, take on the roles in a made-up performance and write silly poems.  Fourth graders are coming into their own, and what looks like play might hint at the talents and interests the child may embrace later in life.

    Instructor: Elisa Garcia

    Fourth Grade students visit Swartley Art Center twice a week for 45 minute art classes.  Students continue to build on the importance of color, line and shape, pattern, design and composition, while exploring broader concepts of drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, digital art and photography

  • Health and Wellness

    Instructor: Kim Franco

    The goal of the Health and Wellness program at Dwight-Englewood School is to educate students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make healthy lifestyle choices. In fourth grade the primary focus is on recognizing that needs change as growth and development occurs and students are able to explain the key concepts of each lesson.

    Instructor: Mary Heveran

    Students attend music class twice a week for 45 minutes each time.  In addition to all music concepts and skills previously taught, students are now introduced to part singing, harmony, and countermelody.

    Instructor: Beth Lemire

    Fourth graders participate in a yearlong study of the Hudson River.  They start the year by examining attitudes they have about the river and what they may already know about the river.  From there the study is built.

    In third, fourth and fifth grades, students meet three to four times a week in a FLES (Foreign Language Elementary School) setting with Doctora Collado.

  • Technology

    Instructor: Christine Nicoloau

    The goal of the Lower School technology program is to develop activities and projects that make connections to the themes and curriculum that are covered in each grade level. Using a variety of apps and programs students learn the skills they need to move on to middle school and beyond.  The projects challenge students to think critically, organize their ideas, and present them using a variety of media.  Classrooms are equipped with smartboards and projection capabilities. There are several carts of iPads that are shared by classes and include a variety of apps that support the curriculum.
