The Lower School at Dwight-Englewood School is a vibrant and captivating place. Each classroom is filled with children and adults from very diverse families and experiences. Our primary focus is on the academic, social-emotional and physical growth and success of the children in our care. Daily, the dedicated faculty and staff at Dwight-Englewood School work to foster an environment of engagement that allows our students to encounter rich academic tasks. The students also have the opportunity to explore and to learn with, and from, one another. Each day, our children are astir with great ideas and perspectives about the work that they encounter throughout the school day. These lessons and experiences seek to draw on each child’s creativity. At various times during the school day, students are provided with opportunities to think critically and to receive guidance and support as they demonstrate perseverance through challenging tasks. The full experience in the Lower School helps our students to know that they can, and will, make a difference in our ever-changing world.
I invite you to learn more about the Lower School.
Sincerely, Kim Lewis Lower School Principal

Our Teaching Philosophy
Guided by the Mission of Dwight-Englewood School, Lower School teachers strive to create classroom communities in which every child feels cared for and known. We believe that when students feel connected to one another and their school, they are more engaged and invested in their learning.
Teachers help students work towards shared goals, find common interests and make sure there are opportunities for students to recognize that they are a part of something larger than themselves. “We are a community in so many ways,” explains kindergarten teacher and Dwight-Englewood parent Tricia Fiore. “There are so many ways we connect - in the classroom it’s our morning meeting where the students in our classroom get to know one another. As a grade level we connect as colleagues when we look at our curriculum and plan, and as a kindergarten community we eat, play, learn and celebrate together. As a Lower School division we learn together in our faculty meetings and assemblies and as a school we meet and join together around the arts, sports and events that foster a sense as a whole-school community.”
