Alumni Celebrate @ Spring Reunion

Alumni of the Englewood School for Boys (ESB), the Dwight School, and Dwight-Englewood returned to campus this past Saturday, May 30, for their Spring 2009 Reunion. Enjoying beautiful weather and an event program filled with various activities, alumni celebrated this opportunity to socialize, reminisce and remember classmates who have now passed on.

The event included several award ceremonies honoring alumni and former faculty and staff members. Lisa Diaz Nash '76, CEO of internationally nonprofit Blue Planet Run, was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award -- a designation shared with celebrity actress Brooke Shields '83; former Secretary of State George Schultz '38; singer Lesley Gore '64 and artist Katherine McKenna '74. In her acceptance remarks Nash spoke of the influence of her D-E education on her life, including her fond memories of teacher Doris Gelman.

The D-E Athletic Hall of Fame inducted several new members into its ranks as well.

"Golfer extraordinaire" David Chubinsky '94 and Richard "Dick" Sakala, who coached Varsity Football and taught math at ESB in the late 60's, were individually recognized for their significant contributions to the school's athletic program. The 1978 Boys Varsity Soccer Team, which captured the State Prep "B" soccer title, was honored as a group. Coach Chris Schmid welcomed back the alumni players present, including former co-captain Jed Lans '79.

A bench in memory of Elias Katsaros '89 was dedicated at one of several memorial-related events. The bench was installed overlooking Leggett Field, a favorite spot for Katsaros according to reflective words shared by D-E Coach George Van Haasteran.

The Class of 1984 also dedicated a tree and plaque in memory of their classmates Tina Weiss, Faranak Fatemi Moir, and Christine Heath.

D-E Athletic Hall of Fame honoree Coach Richard "Dick" Sakala enjoyed the reception with his family and friends on Leggett Field, following the induction ceremony.
