The 1982 World Champion and Olympic figure skater Elaine Zayak recently visited D-E's Lower School to share her fascinating reflections on international competitions, practice and perseverence. Students were engrossed as she gave her first-hand accounts of her experiences, including her participation in the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. They also were given a hands-on opportunity to examine Zayak's equipment, including her boots, costumes, and sports memorabilia. Zayak, today a skating coach and a D-E parent, is the individual for whom the famed "Zayak Rule" is named in figure skating competition. She was the first woman to land multiple triple jumps in a program, and she won the 1982 World Figure Skating Championships thanks to landing six triple jumps.
In the words of Melissa Davies, Lower School faculty member, "We were thrilled to host Elaine Zayak here at the D-E Lower School! What better way to enable our students to appreciate the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, than to hear from an ice skating champion directly! This was an exceptional learning opportunity for us all."
