Day of Silence Recognized by Students' Gay-Straight Alliance

Upper School students in the Dwight-Englewood Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) will recognize the "National Day of Silence" this Friday, April 16, an event sponsored by the GLSEN, The Gay-Lesbian-Straight Educators Network.    This 14th Annual Day of Silence event is a national youth movement that brings attention to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people who are "silenced by bullying, harassment, name-calling, and other forms of verbal and physical abuse."  A statement provided by GLSEN for participating students to use includes the following:

"I believe that one of the ways to address this issue is to build awareness and to make a commitment to stop this problem. Ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are NOT hearing today. Imagine all of the gay and lesbian voices that are silenced EVERY day. What will YOU do to end the silence?"

With assistance from GSA faculty advisor Brian Kosnik, students also hosted a lighthearted and entertaining Karoake event earlier this month in the School's Hajjar Auditorium.  See photos at left.
