Varsity Softball Seniors End Season on a High Note
Liz Tausner
The Dwight-Englewood Softball team recently defeated their Bergen County Softball League Olympic Division rival New Milford 3-0 in their last home game of the year. On a day when five Upper School seniors [Sara Brescia, Ashley Goldenberg, Audrey Marquardt, Shantel Mendez, and Danielle Orchant] were recognized by their coaches, teammates and fans, it was only fitting that the upset win was due to the play of the senior captains.
Coach Matthew Schukis noted: "The New Milford vaunted offense was held at bay by a strong pitching performance by senior pitcher Danielle Orchant, who limited the Knights to three hits for the seven inning shutout win. D-E got all of the scoring it would need in the first inning when senior Shantel Mendez led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on an error to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Mendez later increased the Bulldogs' lead to 2-0 by belting a solo home run in the third inning. Then in the bottom of the fourth, senior Ashley Goldenberg singled home fellow senior Sara Brescia to close out the scoring, as the Lady Bulldogs beat New Milford for only the second time in D-E softball history."
Located in Englewood, New Jersey, Dwight-Englewood is a greater New York City area private school with a rigorous college prep curriculum for boys and girls in preschool through grade 12.
