Boys' Varsity Tennis Moves on to State Semi-Finals!

Liz Tausner

In their ongoing quest for victory in the prestigious Tournament of Champions, the D-E Boys' Varsity Tennis Team faced a tough New Providence team yesterday.  After wins from Francis Loh and Eric Rosengart at 1st doubles and Max Sacks at 2nd singles, and losses at 3rd singles and 2nd doubles, it came down to senior Daniel Shutov at 1st singles.  Shutov faced one of the best players in the state. He won the first set 6-2, but the second set was a grinder. At 4-all, deuce, with New Providence serving, a sudden storm moved the match indoors.  Shutov fought off one set point and clawed into a tie-breaker. In that tie-breaker he just cranked it up a notch, hit 3 service winners and ran away with it 7-1.

Coach Joe Iwanski reports: "(D-E) is now one of the Final Four teams in NJ!  We take on mighty Westfield today at 3pm in West Windsor. This is the same team that knocked us out of the tournament 2 years ago, again in the semifinals. The winner takes on the winner of today's Chatham/Millburn match in tomorrow's final.  Our boys are tired, but they are fighters.  We've got a solid shot at this thing, which no D-E tennis team has ever won.  Go Bulldogs!"  Click here to read more about the Bulldogs' march to the Tournament of Champions.

In earlier matches leading up to today's semifinals, the team defeated rival Newark Academy and then last Thursday the team won their second State Group title in 3 years and only the 5th in D-E history, defeating Moorestown Friends 4-1. Senior Daniel Shutov won at 1st singles, Max Sacks was victorious at 2nd singles, Jason Katz won at 3rd singles, and doubles players Francis Loh & Eric Rosengart also won at 1st doubles.
