Last Friday, April 15, D-E joined thousands of organizations, schools, and individuals worldwide in the recognition of the
Day of Silence, sponsored by the
GLSEN, the Gay-Lesbian-Straight Educators Network. The School's student club, the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), presented the 15th annual event at D_E, which is a part of a global student-led day of action. On the Day of Silence, concerned students and faculty take a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment — in effect, the silencing — experienced by LGBQT students and their allies.
As part of the event, Upper School students and faculty members used a "Silence" card detailing their partipation and for use in classrooms and social activities. Graphic black and white T-shirts with the straightforward but compelling message of "SILENCE" were also sold by the GSA leading up to the annual awareness-building day.
Brian Kosnik, Faculty Advisor to the D-E GSA, challenged the D-E community to think through the meaning of the event, remarking, "Ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are NOT hearing today. Imagine all of the gay and lesbian voices that are silenced EVERY day. What will YOU do to end the silence?"
