Outstanding Student Scholars Honored

Liz Tausner
The annual Cum Laude Honor Society Induction Ceremony took place recently in the school's Hajjar Auditorium, recognizing the achievements of 22 outstanding Upper School seniors.   The Cum Laude Society is the most prestigious membership organization for independent school students nationwide.  Dwight-Englewood faculty, staff, and students' family and friends were in attendance at the event, which is considered by many to be one of the most memorable and meaningful celebrations during the D-E academic year.

The mission of Cum Laude is to recognize academic achievement in secondary schools for the purpose of promoting excellence (Areté), justice (Diké) and honor (Timé).  The induction ceremony featured faculty members' personal comments on each of the student honorees.

Speaking about senior Jodie (Minsun) Kim, History Department Chair Carole DeVito noted, "[Jodie] finds something interesting in everything she studies...[her] critical spirit is always tempered with compassion and understanding. How many times has she shared with me her profound concern for others? I really can’t count them.  Minsun Kim, you have taught me much and will continue to teach others great lessons as you pursue your scholarship in college."

Language Arts faculty member Romualdo Bautista remarked about Jeff Spingeld '11, "I have had the opportunity to teach [Jeff] for 3 years. Truthfully, since that time I have been quite impressed to see the ability that he has for learning languages...Today I can communicate with him in three different languages; English, Spanish and Mixteco, an indigenous language spoken in parts of Mexico.  There is no doubt that Jeff was born with an incredible and natural talent for language!  He is like a sponge that is ready to soak up all the knowledge that he is given.  There is no doubt that a young man as dedicated to what he loves as Jeff is, will go very far, and will touch many lives."

Inspiring keynote remarks during the ceremony were provided by Jennifer Samet, a graduate of the D-E Class of 1993.  An art historian, writer, and curator, Samet has a PhD in art history, with a specialization in post-war representational painting. Speaking fondly of her Dwight-Englewood memories and her experiences in a variety of intriguing professional roles and responsibilities in the years following, Samet noted, "...if we take the time to listen to ourselves we will know what it is we are supposed to do. As you go forward in your lives, I hope that you will take your time to listen to your inner teacher, and those outside teachers as well, who honor this path."

D-E faculty member Peter Bograd, the Dwight-Englewood School's Cum Laude Chapter President, remarked, "We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Samet back to D-E for this important ceremony."

Jack Armitage, Math Department faculty member and Chapter Secretary, also added, "All the students recognized tonight truly exemplify the Cum Laude Society's values, through their classroom, co-curricular, and community outreach activities.  We heartily congratulate this year's honorees."
