May 2011 marks the 8th anniversary year that an all-student theatrical group, Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) Dinner Theatre, will present a musical theater performance to benefit the NJ SEEDS Foundation. “13 The Musical” will be performed on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28, beginning with dinner at 6:30 and then a performance of the show at 7:30 pm in the Hajjar Auditorium on the D-E School Campus.
The Dinner Theatre is led entirely by D-E students, including a Director who, together with his/her chosen cast and crew, handles literally all aspects of managing a theatrical production, including producing, staging, costuming, marketing / promotions, ticket sales and dining/refreshments. Brian Hajjar, a D-E senior and this year’s Dinner Theatre Director, selected “13 the Musical” for this year’s production. A coming of age story, “13” profiles Evan Goldman, the main character, who is forced to move from New York City to Appleton, Indiana. There, he has to make new friends and survive all of the common problems middle students face.
Net proceeds from D-E Dinner Theatre benefit
NJ SEEDS, a non-profit organization that prepares academically talented, financially limited youth for success at competitive secondary schools. Dwight-Englewood has a long-standing relationship with NJ SEEDS, from which a number of D-E Upper School students are recruited annually. The School is among the “founding partnership” schools for NJ SEEDS, and as such holds a seat on the organization’s Board of Trustees. Brian Hajjar ’11, the student director of Dinner Theatre, notes:
“NJ SEEDS foundation is a part of every student’s life here at D-E. Nothing feels better than helping students in need!”
D-E Dinner Theatre traditionally entails bringing together members of several groups within the D-E community. “13” features a cast of thirteen teenaged students from both the Upper and Middle Schools (Grades 8-12), and one adult. The result is a uniquely integrated dynamic with students directing those individuals who are their teachers or advisors in more traditional capacities.
Hajjar comments, “Dinner Theatre is a hidden gem on the D-E campus. By letting us run a production entirely on our own, this program showcases all our talents! Yes, we do have some adult help, but we, the students, have full responsibility from the first days of rehearsal to the final show. I’m proud of my production team and cast for doing an excellent job so far and wowed at the fact that we have taken on this exciting and difficult challenge! The fact that our efforts will result in financial support for NJ SEEDS is an added benefit and incentive.”
