Remembering 9-11

Liz Tausner
The Upper School (US) and Middle School (MS) Divisions today remembered the events of September 11 and honored the memories of those who perished.  In two separate assemblies, both divisions reflected on the tragedy through readings of poetry and prose and musical offerings.

English faculty member Joan Maffetone, who teaches the US course entitled "America Post-9/11,"  directed the assemblies and also coordinated the organization of a reflective space in the School's Carson Reading Room.   The "Remembrance Room" showcased both archival pieces and materials developed by students in the Post-9/11 course, including newspapers and other magazines covering that day; original drawings, paintings, essays, and DVDs; and a notebook of memories written by D-E students approximately two months following the attacks.

The assemblies included remarks from MS faculty member and D-E alumna Anne Cole '02.  She was a senior at the School on September 11, 2001, and she spoke compellingly of how the School community responded over the course of that day and in the weeks that followed.  Students then read from the poem "The Names” by Billy Collins, who was the United States Poet Laureate from 2001-2003, and wrote the poem for a joint session of the US Congress on the first anniversary of September 11.  Students also read excerpts from  the "Portraits of Grief" article that ran in the New York Times, and an article that ran in D-E Today magazine in early 2002,  recognizing the memories of those from our D-E alumni and extended community who died (please see below).

The program concluded with a beautiful performance of "America the Beautiful," sung by Matthew Schukis, Upper School Performing Arts faculty member and Vocal Ensembles Director, followed by a string performance by the ensemble String Jam.
