Members of the D-E Upper School's AIDS Awareness Club joined other New Jersey high school students yesterday, December 1, for the Youth World AIDS Day conference, sponsored by Hackensack University Medical Center. During the conference, the students listened to stories of those who are living with HIV. In addition, there was a panel of doctors who answered the students' questions about the disease.
Student Avery Singer remarked, "This year is an especially important year for (the D-E AIDS Awareness Club) as we join the international movement towards AIDS prevention: getting to zero. Our club was affirmed by learning from Dr. Julia Piwoz, who works in the Hackensack Medical Center's pediatric infectious disease department, that the funds we have raised over the past few years have helped to support the conference as well as children with HIV/AIDS in needs of services."
Singer continued, "We look forward to our continued efforts for 2012 as we plan to bring a series of speakers for AIDS Awareness week in February. We already have our eyes on great speakers to bring in who will be supported by upcoming fund-raisers such as our bake sale in January."
