Athletics Department recently hosted its annual Winter Sports Banquet last Thursday, recognizing those D-E students who participate in winter sports. Held in Hajjar Auditorium, the event honored the following teams: Varsity Winter Track; Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball; Girls' Varsity Basketball; Boys' Freshman Basketball; Boys' Junior Varsity Basketball; and Boys' Varsity Basketball.
Opening remarks were provided by
Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett, who congratulated all the athletics gathered for a particularly exciting 2011-'12 season, and then thanked the coaches and D-E Trainer Greibin Agramonte for their leadership and dedication. He also expressed his admiration to the athletes' parents for their time and commitment, including driving student athletes to practices and games; and helping them manage their many responsibilities beyond athletics. Dr. De Jarnett then highlighted some particular winter sports athletes, noting that their personal accomplishments were representative of their team's achievements, including:
Bobbie Javier for the astounding number of winter track records she broke;
Haley Brescia for her 39-point game; and senior Wesley Dickinson for an amazing number of career points: 1,890!
The program was then turned over to the coaches for each of the winter sports teams.
For Winter Track, Coach Jerry Krauthamer recognized and thanked the students who were "cross country veterans" as well as newcomer freshmen runners and others who have been on the team for several years. Coach Krauthamer noted that the Winter Track team had its best season by far in at least 4 years, with 6 records set for the 3200 meter run (2 mi), 1600 meter run (1 mi), 800 meter run (1/2 mi), and 400 meter dash; there were also 2 medaling relay teams, and many individual athletes also earned medals.

Most Improved = Vanessa Pike ‘13 & Ryan Semsel ‘15
Coaches’ Award = Victoria Ngo ‘12
Most Valuable Runner = Bobbie Javier ‘12
Coach La-Krisha Howard of the Girls Junior Varsity (JV) Basketball Team next spoke of what it means to be a D-E Bulldog, and how her girls taught her patience.
Girls JV Basketball Awardees were as follows:
Most Improved = Alex De Los Reyes ‘13
Coach’s Award = Isabel Guerriero ‘15
MVP = Jennifer Koenigsberg ‘14
In recognizing the Freshman Boys’ Basketball team, Coaches James Aitkin and Omari Knox next talked about how the boys showed up every day and “… absorbed everything they were taught.”
Freshman Boys' Basketball Awardees were as follows:
Most Improved = Edward J. Ivy ‘15
Coaches’ Award = Jordan Runyon ‘15
MVP = Daniel Reiff ‘15
Coach Andre Thomas with the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team praised his team's hard work and effort.
JV Boys' Basketball Awardees were as follows:
Most Improved = Eric Flaim ‘14
Coach’s Award = Peter “Max” Ballas-Bograd ‘15
MVP = Brandon Dyson ‘15
In honoring the Girls' Varsity Basketball team, Coaches Matthew Larrowe and Marissa Moore mentioned the awards and honors earned by members of the team, and highlighted the team’s victory over New Milford for the first time in 4 years, which was noted as "good closure for the seniors on the team". Coach Larrowe also highlighted how the turning point for the team was its December 29th win against Union City.
Girls' Varsity Basketball Awards were as follows:
Most Improved = Stella & Alexis Mayer, ‘15
Coaches’ Award = Stacy Goldberg ‘14 & April Flaim ‘12
MVP = Haley Brescia ‘13
Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach Eli Goldberger discussed how the team finished with a strong 22-5 record overall, won the Bergen Holiday Tournament, went to the state sectionals and played against the #1 team in the US (St. Anthony's). In Goldberger's words: "These boys never quit, and they were extremely dedicated."

Most Improved = Brian Breslin ’12 & Keion Osbourne ‘13
MVP = Wesley Dickinson ‘12 (1,890 career points)
