Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) expresses a warm welcome to our new incoming faculty and staff, who are joining us this Fall 2012 due to the retirements and new pursuits of several in our community over the past few months. These individuals bring a wonderful breadth of experience to our School! We express our gratitude and wish the very best to those individuals who are moving on, and we are also very excited to introduce the following new individuals to our D-E family:
Third Grade Teacher Roni Blaustein is entering her second career as a teacher, having previously practiced law for 10 years in Manhattan and Scarsdale. After obtaining her BS in Management cum laude at Binghamton University, Ms. Blaustein received her Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center and worked at various law firms before branching out on her own for six years. In 2006, she began her career switch into education, serving as an Assistant Teacher, Teaching Fellow and substitute/leave replacement teacher at schools in Scarsdale and White Plains, while obtaining her Master of Arts in Teaching for Childhood Education from Manhattanville College in 2009.
Rachel Deutsch-Brusky, new to 6th Grade Art and the D-E Visual Arts Department, spent this past summer teaching four art courses at D-E's Summer Connections. The Jersey City resident has served a variety of posts in the NY/NJ area, from Visiting Artist to Artist-in-Residence at New York Presbyterian Hospital, to private art instructor. She graduated with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design in Illustration and Art History (RISDE), and received her MFA cum laude in Painting from the New York Academy of Art in 2006.
After receiving an MS in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education in 2002, substitute teacher Mary Cushman has worked at several college preparatory schools in the NY/NJ region, including the Columbia Preparatory School, Bank Street School for Children and Brooklyn's Packer Collegiate Institute. Most recently Ms. Cushman was a Kindergarten teacher for seven years at the First Presbyterian Pre-School and Kindergarten in Englewood. Ms. Cushman has also had extensive experience in theatre, having graduated from Swarthmore College in English with a Concentration in Theatre and working in various acting jobs for more than 15 years. She is also the wife of D-E English Department Chair Fred Daly.
Transportation Coordinator Danielle Devlin joins D-E after four years as a customer service representative and inventory manager at the Lawrenceville-based Moore Frames, Inc. The wife of D-E's Director of Facilities and Varsity Boys Baseball Coach, Bruce Devlin, Danielle has three children: Dallas, who will begin attending D-E as a freshman this year; Abigayle; and Clayton.
After seven years at the Chatham Day School, Maria Kaufman is D-E's new 7th Grade Math/Science teacher. She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2004. While at Chatham Day, Kaufman wore a variety of hats, including Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher; Elementary Division Head; 5th grade Math and Science teacher; Dean of Academic Studies; and, most recently and simultaneously, 6th grade Math teacher and Assistant to Director of Advancement.
Upper School History and English teacher Kimberly Lalli comes to D-E after teaching various history classes at Morristown Beard School, where she has worked since graduating from Washington and Lee University in 2007. During her tenure with Morristown Beard, Lalli was a Student Government Association advisor, class advisor, and member of the Financial Aid committee as well as the Extracurricular Activity Compensation Committee and Discipline Committee. She was also Head Coach of the JV Field Hockey team in 2007 and Varsity Field Hockey from 2008 to 2011, as well as an Assistant Varsity Softball coach.
Sarah Macone graduated from the Rye Country Day School before spending the last nine years in Boston, obtaining a BA in Child Development magna cum laude at Tufts University and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education at Lesley University. She has taught sixth grade for the past four years at The Learning Project Elementary School, but is looking forward to focusing solely on teaching 6th Grade English, which has always been her favorite subject.
Robert Murphy joins D-E's Performing Arts Department as a Theatre teacher after 13 years as Director of Theatre at Cranbrook Educational Community's Upper School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. After getting his Theatre BFA degree at the University of Minnesota and an MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Robert's career has taken him from teaching at L.A.'s Company of Characters to various stints in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area, all the while directing various stage productions as well as acting in both film and television productions as a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Lower School Psychologist Ann Niles, Psy.D., has had more than seven years of experience as a school therapist/psychologist in California and, most recently, The Town School in Manhattan, where she was the Upper School Psychologist from 2009 to 2011. Dr. Niles obtained her BS at Ohio University and Doctoral Degree at San Francisco's American School of Professional Psychology. She spent the past year working part-time at a private practice in Millburn that specialized in children and family psychotherapy.
Upper School Science Teacher Jennifer Passero first worked at the Sturgis Charter School in Massachusetts for a year before spending six years at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry as a Biology Teacher, as well as Head Coach of Varsity Field Hockey and Lacrosse. A graduate of the University of Rochester with a BS in Biology, Ms. Passero is about to complete her Masters of Arts in Supervision of Science Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, this October.
Michael Rodenbush comes to D-E as an experienced 3rd Grade Teacher, with a combined decade of teaching 2nd and 3rd grade at The Town School, followed by another decade as both a 3rd and 4th grade teacher at Trinity School. Mr. Rodenbush studied Philosophy at Ithaca College and received an M.S. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education. In 2008 he took a brief respite from teaching to focus on his freelance photography, specializing in architectural and interiors. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, The Washington Post and The New York Times.
Lauren Rosen, Ed.S., will fill D-E's new Middle School Psychologist position after five years as School Psychologist at The Cooke Center for Learning and Development's Early Childhood Center. While obtaining her M.S.E. and Ed.S. at Fordham University, Dr. Rosen gained experience through an externship at NYU's Child Center Study as well as internships at Cresskill's E.H. Bryan Elementary School and Manhattan's Asher Levy School.
With 15 years of experience teaching science to middle and high schoolers, Cary Berryman Rosillo is D-E's newest 7th grade Science teacher. Formerly of Juno Beach, Fla., Ms. Rosillo has also served as Science Department Chair for three years, during which she won numerous awards, including the National Science Teachers Association's (NSTA) Frey-Neo Sci Award for Excellence in 2009 and Pearson Education's Most Valuable Teacher in the NSTA Southeast Regional Conference, also in 2009. That same year, she was also a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Eighth Grade Math/Science Teacher Edward "Ted" Scovell joins D-E after a two-year stint as the Director of Science Outreach at The Rockefeller University, which was proceeded by 12 years of teaching various 8th grade math and science classes at NYC's Friends Seminary. Since 2009, the Harvard alumnus has been the director of the NYC Smart Team Program, which provides summer protein modeling classes for teachers and students. Education is actually Mr. Scovell's second career, having worked 11 years on Wall Street at firms including Morgan Stanley, J.P.Morgan, and Bankers Trust Co.
Prior to joining D-E, Linda Segar, who will be teaching 6th grade Math, taught for nearly 15 years and served as a Math Specialist at the Pre-K and 2nd through 4th Grade levels with other college preparatory schools. Her experience includes teaching at both The Town School and Rockland Country Day School. She has a BFA in Dance and Composition from SUNY Purchase and a Master of Science, Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education.
Fresh from receiving her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Cornell's Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Upper School
Math/Science Teacher Rachel Speer comes to D-E with nine years' worth of varied teaching experiences. Her prior roles have included Marine Biology Teaching Intern at Phillips Exeter Academy, and Volunteer Teacher at Asha Kiran School in Bangalore, India, and she has tutored students at New York Cares and adults at Varsity Tutors. Dr. Speer graduated cum laude from Amherst College as a Biology and History major, and garnered research experience at Amherst, the National Institutes of Health and Weill Cornell/Burke Medical Research Institute.
D-E's new Upper School Learning Specialist Alicia Susser earned her B.S. magna cum laude in Inclusive Elementary Education at Syracuse and her M.S. summa cum laude in Literacy at Hunter College. Ms. Susser has held various roles at Manhattan's Stephen Gaynor School for children with learning disabilities, most recently as a Head Teacher in Middle School Special Education.
Lorraine Yamin, M.S.Ed. MSW, joins the Lower School as a PreK 4 Teacher, following five years as a Special Educator/Group Facilitator at The Bank Street Family Center in Manhattan. Her prior experience also includes serving as a Learning Specialist at The Saul and Carol Zabar Nursery School. Ms. Yamin is a graduate of Rutgers with a B.A. in Psychology, Bank Street College of Education and Hunter College School of Social Work. She has also served as a Special Educator/Case Co-coordinator at the New York-based YAI-NYL Lifestart and as a Special Educator at The Child Development Center.
