Dwight-Englewood School's Fall 2012 interscholastic athletics program officially kicked-off earlier this week when both the D-E Junior Varsity and Varsity Field Hockey teams faced rival River Dell for home games on Graham Field. Varsity lost 2-0 but played a strong game, and the JV team tied River Dell 1-1 in the final minute of the game. This season will likely have its share of exciting moments.
Here's a brief summary of what to expect from many of the D-E teams this Fall 2012:
In
Volleyball, Morgan Withrow begins her first season as head coach after serving as assistant to Gregg Emery for the past four seasons. She brings a wealth of knowledge and playing experience as a former Division 1 Volleyball player and captain at Boston College. The team also looks to rebuild, having lost many starters last season to graduation. However, the Bulldogs have four year starter Kailen Krame ‘13 back on the outside to help lead the team to their most successful season yet. Also be on the lookout for outside hitter Lindsay Saftler ‘14 who is anxious to return to competition after a knee injury sustained during basketball season.
Coach Dean Wells reports that our Boys Varsity Soccer program will be competitive this fall. The team has 14 seniors with plenty of varsity experience. Key players to watch out for will be Noah Rosenberg '13 in goal and Luke Sherman '13 in the midfield as well as Chris Sherman '13 up front.
Our Girls Varsity Soccer program will be rebuilding after the matriculation of two 2012 graduates. The squad will have some fresh faces this year led by Taylor Krakower '16 and some key veterans returning from last years’ state sectional finalist team including, Stacey Goldberg '14, Haley Brescia '13, Sydney Hertz '12, Vanessa Pike '13 and Alex De Los Reyes '13.
The D-E Boys Varsity Football Team will be competing in the Hudson Valley League this upcoming season and will rely heavily on seniors Adam Spivak, Zach Rosen, John Dargan and Andre Amirsaleh. The return of Eric Mourkakos '13 will also be a big lift for the Bulldogs.
In Field Hockey, Coach Kimberle Franco reports that the Bulldogs are still a young team even though there are ten returning letter winners from last season. The strength is in the leadership from seniors Katia Hajjar (D), Saundra Kornbluth (F), and Leah Steinmetz (M). Junior Arianna Sidoti and Sophmore Isabel Guerriero will be counted on to control the midfield. Sophomore Stasia Kuske shows promise in the goal. With nearly everyone back from last year, the Bulldogs will be playing like they have something to prove.
Girls Tennis will be a dominant force in Bergen County and plans to challenge for State Title. Sophomore Victoria Patrenko '15 will more than likely take over at first singles for Lauren Urbont '12 who held that spot for the past four seasons. Patrenko, who is new to the team this year, will add fire power to an already dominant squad. Returners Samantha Balanevsky '12, Jackie Herssens '12, Alexa Colas '12 and Rachel Kupellian '12 have plenty of Varsity experience and should help guide Dwight-Englewood to another league title as well as strong showings in the State and County Tournaments.
For students on
D-E's Middle School (MS) teams, the season officially begins next week (September 10). D-E's MS Fall teams include Boys Soccer (A/B levels); Girls Soccer;Girls Field Hockey; Coed Cross Country; Girls Tennis; Girls Volleyball; and Touch Football as an activity. MS Athletic Director Christian Schmid explains that many of the MS teams will be starting very fresh and energized this season, as they graduated players earlier this year to the Upper School athletics program. In his words:
"The MS athletics program may be students'first experience with a specific sport and/or with competitive teams, or may represent a move from a club or town recreationleague. We strive to provide a safe learning environment for students to acquire the skills and concepts for the sports in which they participate, and aim to be a strong feeder into the even more competitive Upper School athletics program."
