D-Ebaters Earn Accolades

The D-E Varsity Debate team had a successful tournament at River Dell last week, with partners Joshua Davis and Noah Golub placing 2nd out of 40 different teams from ten schools.  Joshua explained: "The debate topic was whether or not the United States should increase its transportation infrastructure investment, and specifically, Noah and I devised a plan solely for this debate which involved upgrading a civilian port in Guam so that American troops who were stationed in Japan could be safely relocated back to U.S. territory."

At the River Dell tournmanet, Joshua also earned the 1st place speaker award, a merit determined by speaking clarity, organization, and eloquence. Joshua Panter received the 3rd place speaker award. Additionally, Clifford Yudkoff received the "best judge" award, one of the only judges from Dwight-Englewood School debate team history to do so.

Noah Golub added: "[We] have performed excellently at the previous two tournaments of the year, with Joshua Panter and Michelle Boukhover taking 1st place at Fair Lawn, and Joshua Davis and I earning the 3rd place award at North Bergen."

Based on these achievements, Joshua Davis currently ranks as the 2nd best speaker of the Bergen County Debate League, and Joshua Panter is ranked #9 individually, according to a debate statistics sheet that the coaches send out after each meet.  Joshua and Noah also rank as the 2nd best team of the League. The Bergen County Debate League consists of hundreds of students from over 15 schools in the area.

Noah summarized the team's activities as follows:  "There are four tournaments left until the [League] championship, and we hope to meet similar successes as the year goes on."
