Director of Multicultural Affairs Clinton L. Carbon was invited by Lower School Spanish teacher Janet Glass to speak at the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County on Feb. 10th. Held at the Society in Teaneck, this weekly Platform Meeting Program featured his presentation on "Diversity and Education: The Road to Inclusivity" provided insight on the ways in which diversity can be appreciated and emphasized in, and through, education.

Carbon began with an introduction to his personal story, from being born a "Civil Rights baby" in Detroit, Michigan, to growing up a product of the public school system in Indianapolis, and how he fell into education. He then spoke of how diversity has grown into a fear of "others", and then raised the questions, "How do we eliminate the fear? What role does diversity have in the classroom and why is it so important?"

His solution includes an "anti-bias training" of teachers to create an anti-bias curriculum to "alleviate the fear and frustration of creating a culturally literate classroom." Carbon then led a few thought-provoking exercises to illustrate this, before closing with the nine Principles of Good Practice for Equity and Justice of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), of which D-E is a member and must uphold in order to be accounted for by the NAIS.
