Earlier this week approximately 100 volunteers, comprised of parents, grandparents, former faculty and staff members, and Trustees, enjoyed the School's first-ever All-Volunteer Kickoff at the Englewood Field Club in Englewood. A continental breakfast was served prior to the hour and a half event, which began with Director of Advancement Pat Boig briefly introducing the members of this year's Parents' Association board, Annual Fund co-chairs and the Admissions Volunteer Coordinator.
Parents' Association President (www.d-e.org/pa) Stephanie Landau P '13/'17 spoke of the various opportunities for parent volunteers during the course of the year, and encouraged the parents to attend the many events scheduled for all three divisions of the school, including events related to the School's 125th anniversary. Next on the roster of speakers was Annual Fund co-chair Barbara Golub P '14/'17, who also spoke on behalf of co-chair Orna Toumit P '22. She explained the need for the Annual Fund in great detail. and to aiming to surpass last year's record $1 million raised. Admissions Volunteer Coordinator Helen Jerome P '14/'16/'22 then spoke of the many Admissions initiatives and events that need volunteers, including open houses, serving as "mentors" to new parents, hosting families of prospective students, and serving as tour guides especially for the Lower School. Parents were encouraged to use the 2013-2014 Volunteer Sign-Up form to indicate what they may be interested in being involved in. The last hour of the kickoff featured D-E Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett (www.d-e.org/head) who first thanked all in attendance for their dedication and enthusiasm, and then spoke about this special, celebratory 125th anniversary year for Dwight-Englewood. Dr. De Jarnett then provided background on the anticipated new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathmatics) building, a $20 million project that will start construction in spring 2014. He shared how "this new facility will not only honor the school's past but will also help with ensuring the school's strong legacy of academic innovation into the future." Dr. De Jarnett concluded his remarks with sharing his recent readings on how to foster childrens' happiness, and how humility and the idea of 'making it better' can encourage happiness. over both the short- and long-term.
At the conclusion of the event, attendees were given a D-E 125 gift bag, and were thanked one last time for their outstanding commitment to the School.
