Student Drives Benefit Phillipines, Animal Welfare

Two Upper School student-led community drives continue this week prior to classes dismissing for the Winter Break.

Upper Schoool students and sisters Evangelina Leventis '15 and Natalie Leventis '15 are leading a fundraiser to benefit the Phillipines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.  Evangelina explains: "The destruction of the Typhoon on November 8th has left the entire country of the Philippines in complete devastation. This disastrous storm has ruined homes, flattened entire cities, and killed tens of thousands of people.  [And] the survivors are not so lucky. Many people do not have food, water, or any medication and the loss of loved ones has made this experience even worse for them. These people need our help desperately to help bring them the resources they need to survive and rebuild their communities."

Labeled jars located around the Upper School are available for cash donations; online donations may also be made at the following link: www.crowdrise.com/de-haiyan2013

All donations will go directly to the Red Cross.

Samantha Brensilber '14 and the Animal Rights Awareness Club are leading a drive to collect items for the Closter Animal Welfare Society (CLAWS).  Samantha has provided the following background information:

"We will be collecting new and used sweaters and sweatshirts, new and used pet toys (including stuffed animals), wet dog and cat food, and dry dog and cat food through Friday, Dec. 20.  Boxes will be in the Advisory rooms for all Upper School students to make their donations.  All items collected will go to the Closter Animal Welfare Society (CLAWS). CLAWS will send the sweaters and sweatshirts to local shelters for the animals' beds and cages.  Any donated toys will also go to shelters, and the food will be taken to a local food pantry for families who cannot afford to purchase pet food for their pets."

The support of our D-E community for both of these causes is appreciated in advance.
