The D-E Math Team, who unofficially but affectionately call themselves "Mathletes," has been participating in the
Bergen County Math League (BCML) for years; Upper School Math teacher and Math Team faculty advisor Gary Roth even recalls seeing a D-E BCML trophy in his son's room,
Gregory '01, who had graduated before Roth began teaching at D-E.
And keeping with tradition, this year’s competition - whose final of six meets, generally held once a month between October and March, was February 28 - proved to be unforgettable for the proud “Mathletes” advisor.
This is the only competition the team enters as a school, even though the score is strictly by individual; there is no "team ranking," which is too bad, according to Roth: "We'd clean up if there were. We usually do well, but this year was very good. Min A '14 had perfect scores (6 out of 6) in four out of the six competitions; in the other two competitions, he scored 5 out of 6."
"In our last competition, within our group of four schools, there were only five perfect scores - all of them Dwight students," Roth continued. "That's not unusual. We usually have all or at least most of the perfect scores, even though a typical meet will have a total of 70 students competing and we'll usually only bring 10 to 12."
The award hierarchy, as explained by Roth, places County first, then Group (which included D-E, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park and Fort Lee High Schools), then School. The winners of County awards are not eligible for Group or School, and the winners of Group are not eligible for School. The awards, from School up to County, are as follows, and all scores are from a possible 30:
One award for first place for the school:
George Georges '15 - 25
And one award for second place for the school:
Clement Wong '15 - 21
In addition, Dwight Englewood had a Group 4, 2nd place winner:
Christopher Liu '17 - 26
Two Group 4, 1st place winners:
Nikhil Kokra '17 - 27
Jason King '16 - 27
A 3rd Place County winner:
Brian Zhang '15 - 28
And, finally, a 2nd Place County winner:
Min A '14 - 29
"The kids who participate have a great time. They enjoy the math, and they enjoy the camaraderie," said Roth. "It's a very good-natured competition."
