Commencement 2014 was held under the 'big tent' on Leggett Field during a gorgeous, sunny Sunday morning, June 1, with senior students and their families and friends, and D-E faculty, staff, and Trustees in attendance. The program both opened and concluded with the strains of bagpipes and included traditional ceremonial musical segments such as Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance." Head of School Dr. De Jarnett then provided welcome remarks to all 1,600 in attendance and thanked all the parents and guardians of the Class of 2014 in particular for their involvement in and dedication to the School, which for some families has represented a nearly 15-year commitment. Dr. De Jarnett also spoke of how this year's graduation ceremony was a milestone event in more ways than one, given that the School is now concluding its year-long celebration of its 125th birthday year.
Members of the Class of 2014 participated in the ceremony in various ways - through their final performances with the Upper School Chorus (singing Simon and Garfunkel's perennial favorite 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters') and Jazz Rock Ensemble in a performance of "Seasons of Love" from the musical RENT. Senior Class Readers
Nicholas Muus ‘14 and
Olivia Britton ‘14 each provided memorable segments, including "If" by Rudyard Kipling. Senior Class Speakers were
Joshua Davis ‘14 and
Krish Pamani ‘14, who happen to share leadership of the D-E Debate Team. Highlights during the ceremony also included a performance of an original cello composition by
Garrett Finn '14, which was the product of his senior focus project, and remarks from Board of Trustees President Dr. John Hajjar and Upper School Principal Joseph Algrant.
As is tradition, the School's most prestigious, final three senior student awards were given during the ceremony: the Senior Citizenship Prize was awarded to
Julia Brice ‘14, who is headed for Elon University; the Trustees Award was given to Stanford-bound
Noah Golub ‘14; and the Bailey Award was given to
Michael Chen ‘14, who will also be attending Stanford University. With the exception of these three honorees, all Upper School awardees were recognized earlier in the week in a morning assembly;

The most compelling remarks of the day arguably came from Commencement Keynoter and D-E alumnus
Kaveh Alizadeh ’84 MD, MSC, FACS and President of Mission Restore. Dr. Alizadeh's speech emphasized the notion of giving back, a tenet fully related to the words of the D-E School mission to 'make it better'. Dr. Alizadeh not only co-founded
Mission Restore, which trains doctors to provide surgical procedures to people in need, but also performs pro-bono surgery on children who do not have healthcare access in countries such as Myanmar, Afghanistan and Bolivia - which is where Dr. Alizadeh received his “gift” 14 years ago. He spoke of how, after saving a young boy’s badly burned hand, the boy’s family gave him an egg as a symbol of appreciation, which was also the family’s only source of income. Dr. Alizadeh also surprised each graduate with an egg of their own - foam, of course - hidden below their chairs, as a reminder for them to seek their gift as they move on from D-E.
Congratulations, Class of 2014!
