“If It’s Broken... Who Will Fix It?” - Original Opera by D-E Fifth Graders

The fifth graders of Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) have created an original opera entitled If It’s Broken… Who Will Fix It? The opera will be performed on Thursday, April 27, 2017 in Hajjar Auditorium at the Klein Campus Center on the D-E campus. The performance will begin at 7:30 PM. Admission is free.
The performance represents nearly a full year of work. Starting in late October, the fifth graders learned that they would be creating their own opera. They had 11 choices of jobs to pick from, including Production Manager, Stage Manager, Public Relations Officer, Performer, Carpenter, Electrician, Set Designer, Costume and Makeup Designer, Historian, Writer and Composer. Each 5th grader interviewed for their favorite jobs. They then chose a name for their opera company: “The Great 48”, because there are 48 total 5th grade students in the company.

The fifth graders chose ‘Perseverance’ as their theme. “Our grade is always persevering and trying their hardest every day. That's what makes us great,” say fifth grade public relations officers Chloe Jacobson D-E ‘23 and Lana Serpico D-E ‘23.  Ms. Lisa Dove, a D-E Lower School music teacher who helps to advise the students, agrees: “The process of creating an original opera takes a lot of cooperation within each job, and a steadfastness to get the work done.  This 5th grade company is really living up to its name!”

Dwight-Englewood School participates in “Creating Original Opera” which is a program of the Metropolitan Opera Guild of New York, NY. In addition to family and friends, members of the media are encouraged and welcome to attend the performance.
