The Curriculum

In classes with an average enrollment of 16 students, our Upper School students get all the attention they need to prepare for college. Their core courses in the humanities will include English, history, world languages, and fine arts. In our nationally recognized, award-winning Math/Science/Technology program, they’ll discover how to use software to gain a greater understanding of important concepts. Honors and Advanced Placement options are available in most subjects.

Courses ranging from Masters of Modernism, to Issues in American Law, to Discrete Mathematics, to Bioethics offer rich opportunities for intellectual growth and exploration. Grade-level deans help ensure that the best choices are made and that academic goals are met. After three years of required courses, students can assume more autonomy, directing their own interests and abilities with continued close advising.

As a Dwight-Englewood student, you’ll occasionally be able to select one-on-one classes and pursue independent research with mentors who are distinguished in their professional careers. Your academic experience may culminate with Senior Focus, a full-year thesis program that requires research, fieldwork, a portfolio, and an academic presentation. Sample topics that students have explored include the following: Role of the Roman Catholic Church in Contemporary Spanish Politics; Effect of Ginseng in Treating Pediatric AIDS; and Authenticity of Authorship in Shakespeare’s Body of Work.

We always encourage students to integrate knowledge from many different and sometimes surprising sources, directing them toward a path of lifelong learning. An ethics component is integrated into many of our courses, along with a dedicated ethics seminar in the sophomore year. Community service, required throughout the Upper School, and small-group advising also offer opportunities for students to explore and refine personal values.

Dwight-Englewood simulates an environment students will encounter as adults. Learning is a never-ending process characterized by inquiry, discussion, and openness to other viewpoints. Our graduates develop an authentic voice and a record of achievement that gives them the confidence to excel in college and beyond.
