Hailing from Englewood, NJ, Isabel Algrant ’17 is a “D-E Lifer” having been enrolled in all three divisions at Dwight-Englewood. It’s ‘all in the family’ in this case, as Isabel’s sister, Haley Algrant ’21, also attends D-E, and her dad, Joe Algrant, is Principal of the Upper School.
Through seventh grade theater class Isabel first discovered a passion for stage directing. Even though she was originally recruited as a performer to be on the stage, it did not take too long for Isabel to realize it “behind the scene” -- organizing the creative collaboration -- was her true interest. Isabel said her first show, Fiddler on the Roof, solidified her interest in theater production as she mentions “nothing feels better than watching people enjoy a show you helped put together.”
Isabel shares her theater directing experiences: “one of the best experiences I had was writing Little 2 Middle [the Middle School musical] and then helping to direct it. Another experience that I am incredibly proud of was working on the School’s performance of Sound of Music. It was my first high school production [involving students of all ages, from the Lower to the Upper School], and I was in the eighth grade. The fact that I could be helpful and people listened to me felt amazing, especially so early in my work in theater.”
Isabel went on to serve as the assistant director for the D-E Performing Arts Department’s production of Les Misérables was then tapped to direct the Spring Theatre 2017 production of High School Musical. Isabel will be attending Wesleyan University next year.
