Boys' Varsity Tennis Named Team of the Year!

D-E's Boys' Varsity Tennis Team, led by co-captains Nikhil Kokra '17 and Daniel Nuzhny '18, finished a very successful 2017 campaign with a sterling 20 and 2 record. 

The team finished the season as the #1 ranked team in Bergen County, the #5 ranked team in the state of New Jersey, won their 3rd consecutive Bergen County Tournament (and 4th in the last 5 years), and won their 21st consecutive League title. Additionally, the team was named the Bergen County Coaches Association (BCCA) Group I-II/Non-Public B "Team of the Year", and was named the Bergen Record's North Jersey "Team of the Year" as well. Both Team of the Year honors were achieved for the 3rd consecutive season.

 

Coach Joseph Iwanski provided the following season recap: "This team has been ranked #1 in Bergen County continuously since April of 2015. The only losses suffered by the Bulldogs this season were to Montgomery, the #1 team in the state, and a 3-2 heartbreaker of a loss to the #4 ranked Newark Academy team in the sectional finals of the state tournament, a battle that came down to three thrilling 3-set matches."

 

Daniel Nuzhny '18 was named 2nd team All-State in singles and 1st team All-State Non-Public in singles, while the junior tandem of Brandon Grill '18 and Shanay Amin '18 were named 1st team All-State Non-Public in doubles. Nuzhny, Grill, Amin, and sophomores Cameron Janssens '19 and Tejas Akula '19 were named 1st team All-League this year as well.

 

Other team members who contributed greatly to the team's success included Rick Sivarak '18, Ben Levin '19, Sascha Ghobadi '20, and Neelan Kumar '20.
