D-E 360° International Summer Trips Underway

Contributed by Julia McSpirit Beckett '17, Summer Communications Intern

In the past week alone, D-E International (a program coordinated by D-E 360°) has bid "Bon Voyage" to students traveling on three trips to various corners of our world, including Ecuador, Norway, and Tanzania!

The trip to Ecuador was the first to leave on June 16th and was made up of a group of 8th graders. This trip is a great opportunity for 8th graders to enjoy, with their friends, their first summer before high school, while also learning about Ecuadorian culture, history, geology, and ecosystem. Students will explore the Andean countryside, Cotopaxi Volcano National Park, the tropical cloud forest, and colonial Quito.

On June 21st, a group of Upper Schoolers left on a 10-day excursion to Norway. This trip is run by World Challenge, which D-E 360° is partnering with for a 5th time this summer. This organization specializes in student-run travels. On top of trekking through the Setesdal Valley and paddling down the Otra River, students will be expected to make important decisions about how the trip will proceed. In this way, D-E 360 takes challenging minds for a changing world outside of the classroom!

The last trip to depart left for Tanzania on June 22nd! For this trip, D-E 360° worked with Rustic Pathways to send students on a one-week service trip to a town in Northern Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro. There, students will be tasked with revamping a primary school to create a more effective learning environment. While there, D-E 360’s travelers will also interact with native students, helping them to grow more confident in their English-speaking abilities. On top of the important work adventurers will be doing, they will also enjoy a hike to a waterfall, lessons in pottery-making from a Tanzanian craftswoman, and a 2-day safari!

As happy as we are to have sent them off, we cannot wait for our travelers to come back and tell us all about their experiences! Safe travels, and Bon Voyage!
