D-E 360° Summer Connections in Full Swing

Contributed by Julia McSpirit Beckett ’17 and Julia Stern, Summer Communications Interns

It’s mid-July, and D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) is now in full swing, with campers of all ages experiencing dozens if not hundreds of new learning opportunities in the arts, cooking, entrepreneurship, sports, STEM, and more. D-E 360° SC Weeks 2 and 3 just wrapped up, and Weeks 4-6 promise to deliver an even more exciting array of activities.

SC “Immersive” courses in Tennis (with expert coach Tsolak Gevorkian), Fencing (with expert coach Patrick Durkan of Durkan Fencing Academy), and “Fit U” 3-Day Challenge -- to name just a few -- have given campers more intensive ‘deep dive’ explorations into athletic endeavors. Meanwhile, courses such as Coding with Raspberry Pi, STEM Challenge, and Model Rocketry have leveraged the learning spaces of the Dwight-Englewood School’s beautiful Hajjar STEM Center, as campers have gained new skills in robotics, programming and problem solving.

Several D-E 360° SC courses over the past few weeks have welcomed special guest teachers and presenters, including “Make Your Own Canvas” – a visual arts a la carte “Enrichment” course which hosted award-winning cartoonist Washington Young, also known as Ton Ton Young; and “Entrepreneurs Academy” which hosted Dr. Vikram Akula, a pioneer in market-based approaches to financial inclusion; Gerald R. Davis, Principal at Alchemy Properties; and David Check, Executive Producer of Major League Baseball Productions. In Week 6, SC will welcome Saudin Rodovic of NY Chess Kids for Chess Camp, which includes a Chess Tournament on Friday, August 4.

Meanwhile our youngest campers are enjoying their “Habitats of the World” Summer 2017 theme.  Thus far our Junior Summer Day Camp, Discoveries, and Adventures campers have experienced explorations into the secret lives of bees, critters of the wetlands, and the world’s vast oceans.  During Weeks 4-6, these campers will learn about the rainforest, polar regions, and mountainous habitats.  Field trips to places such as the Liberty Science Center and Meadowlands Environmental Center have given these campers firsthand exposure to the wildlife that thrives in these various habitats.

In the remaining three weeks of the program, campers who are enrolled in “Scholars” and “Academic Enrichment” courses will continue to work toward earning credits and confidence in academic disciplines such as Algebra, Biology, English, Creative Writing, and Physics.

D-E 360° SC invites you to ‘learn boldly’ this Summer 2017! The program still has limited space available in some courses.  Learn more and register online today at de360.d-e.org/summer or call 201-227-3144.
