7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly

D-E hosted 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly this week at Schenck Auditorium in celebration of Hispanic / “Latinx” Heritage Month. This year’s assembly featured award-winning poet, actor, and writer Carlos Andrés Gómez.

Amina Sadural ’18 introduced Gómez, who noted that this was his second visit to D-E. Through a series of three powerful spoken word performances, Gómez shared his experience as having Columbian and Latinidad heritage. Through his poems and deeply personal reflections, Gómez brought attention to words such as Latino, Latina, and Latinx, bringing to light historical, patriarchal and class-centric labels that can accompany language use. Gómez also shared the story of his Columbian grandmother who always encouraged his authentic background and assured that he is beautiful and “enough.”

The performance was followed by a spirited Q&A session. Students eagerly asked Gómez questions regarding his artistry as a poet, his experience with navigating stereotyping behavior, and how to truly embrace diversity. Dozens of students stayed after the assembly to personally thank Gómez, furthering the discussion.
