Leggett-Umpleby Lecture on Mon., Nov. 27

The third annual Leggett-Umpleby Lecture at Dwight-Englewood School is taking place on Monday, November 27 at 7:00 PM in Hajjar Auditorium in the Klein Campus Center. All D-E families, faculty/staff, alumni and friends are invited to enjoy an evening conversation on a timely topic.  
 
Ms. Mimi Garcia of the D-E School Faculty is honored to be delivering the 2017 Legget-Umpleby Lecture entitled "Political Satire in the Age of 'Fake News.' "
 
A long-time enthusiast of humor and avid consumer of news, Ms. Garcia is pleased to lead a discussion which will explore how satirical news has changed the political discourse and what that means for viewers’ understanding and participation in democratic processes.
 
A 2012 winner of Dwight-Englewood’s Geralyn Kossmann Award, she has been teaching 8th grade English and History for twelve years and is a proud step-mother to graduate Olivia Garcia ’15 and current student Avery Clark-Garcia ’21. Before becoming a teacher, she attended Princeton University and graduated with an A.B. in History with a certificate in Education. Ms. Garcia is member of the 2002 National Championship Lacrosse team and the recipient of the Connie McAllister Award which is “given annually to the player who gives all of herself to the program through participation, effort, selfless dedication, enthusiasm, and heart.” After college, she continued her education at Teachers’ College Columbia University earning a M.A. in the Teaching of Social Studies.
