First graders visit Swartley Art Center once a week for a 45 minute art class. Here they learn about the elements of color, line and shape through drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and digital art. Students work independently and collaboratively and each child creates a collection of work to represent their understanding of the medium and concepts taught.
Each student will create a small collection of work within each medium that demonstrates their understanding of the medium and concepts taught
Children will be provided with time throughout the year and various projects to work both independently and collaboratively in partnerships
Children will be exposed to art made by other children and contemporary art based in childlike concepts
Students will develop an appreciation for art while looking at their own work and that of their peers
Children will begin to develop an art vocabulary for speaking about their art
