Instructor: Ericka Collado

In third, fourth and fifth grades, students meet three to four times a week in a FLES (Foreign Language Elementary School) setting with Doctora Collado.  FLES programs help students develop an openness, understanding and appreciation for other cultures.  Students develop and master functional skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.  The goal of a FLES program is to develop proficiency in oral and written communication in Spanish through the integration of language skills and concepts taught.

The students use memorized phrases and sentences to express message yet start creating with language by recombining learned vocabulary. They also learn specific comprehension strategies in reading and listening.  They also  continue to practice conversations with an emphasis on conversational strategies, and there is an increased in writing.

There are two thematic units that 5th graders study.  One is a Unit called, All About Me. Through this unit of student student engage with vocabulary and concepts related to physical characteristics, personality traits, and family interactions.  The second unit is Don Quijote de La Mancha. Through this unit, students learn about places and modes of transportation, and art.
In the spring, a culminating assessment is given to 5th grade students that assesses proficiency in the three modes of communication: Interpretive reading, interpersonal speaking (conversation) and presentational writing.
