Developing your college list

With over 3,000 colleges and universities in the country, the process of selecting a college can be a daunting undertaking or an opportunity to explore new possibilities. Before considering specific colleges you should assess your individual needs, strengths, goals, and values. Developing your college list is a personal decision, one that requires honest self-evaluation. Defining your priorities will make it easier for you to research and identify colleges that best match your personality and goals.
The following questions will assist you in self-assessment:
  • What are your Values and Goals
  • What values are important to you?
  • What type of person would you like to become?
  • What strengths would you most like to develop?
Your Education:
  • Why do you want to go to college?
  • What are your academic strengths?
  • Do you have an intended field of study?
  • How much academic structure do you prefer; core curriculum or open curriculum?
  • What aspects of Dwight-Englewood have you most enjoyed?
  • How do you best learn: through lectures, discussions, hands-on lab environments?
  • What degree of academic challenge is right for you? 
  • Have any outside circumstances impacted your educational performance?
  • Will the cost of higher education be a factor in your college search?
Your Interests and Activities:
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • Do you have any specific interests or passions?
  • How do you demonstrate those interests or passions?
  • Do you want to pursue any of these in college?
Your Surroundings:
  • What kind of surroundings are important to your happiness and productivity?
  • Would you enjoy living in a different part of the country?
  • Do you prefer urban, suburban, or rural environment?
  • Is a campus important to you?
  • Does the size of the college matter to you?
  • Would you consider colleges that are single sex or religiously affiliated?
  • Would you consider a Historically Black College or University?
Your Personality and Relationships with Others:
  • How would you feel about going to a college where other students are quite different from you?
  • How do you react to pressure, challenge, or competition?
  • How independent are you with regards to your decisions about the college process?
  • How important are others' opinions to you?
