Daryl is in Dwight-Englewood School's Jazz Rock and Stage Band ensembles, and plans to travel with the D-E Orchestra in their ensemble trip to London, UK in Summer 2012. He was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Bass Competition and came in honorable mention. T.S. Monk wrote: "Daryl represents everything this music is about, his respect for the history belies his youth."
Daryl was awarded wth "Best Soloist" and "Best Original Song" honors in Downbeat Magazine's 2010 33rd Annual Student Music Awards. He also plays in the Award-winning Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Big Band and Improv Ensemble. Daryl has attended NJPAC Jazz for Teens and has performed with Jazz greats including Randy Brecker, Jimmy Owens, Dave Liebman, Geoff Keezer, Carl Allen, Jay Leonhart, Warren Vache, Les Paul, Bucky Pizzarelli, Valery Ponomorev, and Don Sickler. Daryl also has performed and recorded with his father, critically-acclaimed drummer and composer Steve Johns. Daryl has recorded his first CD with his own Jazz Trio at the Bennett Studio in his home town of Englewood, NJ and is currently doing recording projects at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio produced by Don Sickler. This Friday, February 11, Daryl will appear with the GRAMMY Ensembles on CBS' The Talk, airing at 2:00 PM ET.
