Fundraising in February: Origami Swans, V-Day

D-E welcomes February with two Valentine's Day-inspired fundraising projects  - one new to 2016, the other a growing favorite in recent years.

Beginning this Friday is a fundraiser that has the Middle and Upper Schools working together. SAGE (Supporting Adolescents Group Experiences) co-advisor and Upper School English faculty member Vicky Frankel provided some background information on the project:

"You've probably seen the beautiful origami sculptures around campus (a bulldog in the Upper School office, for example, as well as many different ones on teachers' desks!) all made by Christine Chow '17. Christine has enlisted the help of many students/friends [including Allison Taylor '17] to participate in folding small rectangles of paper that she then shapes into sculptures.

"This week in SAGE, we are taking the 7th grade to the cafeteria on Friday, Feb. 5, to help with the folding. We'll then give the papers to Christine, who will turn them into swans. Then, Christine is selling the swans at D-E next week to raise money to donate to a local children's hospital.

"Christine wanted to ‘give back’ to the hospital as a loving gesture on Valentine's Day."

For the third year in a row, D-E will be partnering with the Bergen County Women's Alliance in presenting a one-night only V-Day benefit performance on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7:00 PM.  This local effort is just one of thousands of worldwide benefits of the 2016 V-Day campaign, which is an annual “global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness towards ending violence against women.” Helmed by the Women's Empowerment Club, V-Day features D-E students and faculty in offering a collection of original writings, dances and music at the Black Box Theater of bergenPAC in downtown Englewood, with proceeds going to the Englewood-based Women’s Rights Information Center, a 501c3 helping women and their families since 1973.

Tickets for the performance are $25 at the door. Click here to download a press release (PDF) about V-Day 2016.
