D-E’s First Artist-in-Residence Makes His Mark

While our first-ever Artist-in-Residence Cannon Hersey has had his exhibit, “Bridge Conversations,” on display at Swartley Gallery since March 31, the NYC-based artist will be back on campus this Friday for two afternoon events that are open to all students and faculty. First is a mini-lecture/artist talk at 12:30 p.m., where Hersey will be in the Gallery to discuss his “Bridge Conversations” works - which include collaborative pieces created with Visual Arts Chair Gregg Emery on campus in mid-March. Then, from 12:50-1:35 p.m., he’ll join the Studio Art 8 class for some silkscreen printing on the second floor of Swartley Arts Center.

Establishing a resident artist program is not only D-E’s way of promoting the visual arts on campus, but also to introduce students to the notion of “collaborative/creative relationships between artists,” said Emery. “To have an artist of Cannon’s caliber working alongside our students in Swartley, at all grade levels,... encourage[s] fresh questions about art & art making, the business of art and echoing our continued goal of deepening student connections with their own art and the larger art world both historically and contemporary.”

Hersey is a photographer and fine & large-scale artist whose works are based on 35-mm photographs that he uses as a base from which to silkscreen, photo-etch, and other various methods. As mentioned in his online artist bio, “He is committed to connecting art and the public in unique and unexpected ways to explore the meaning of race, religion, culture and commerce in the modern global world.” It’s no surprise, then, that he is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit CrossPathCulture, whose tagline says it all: Global Community Building Through Art. And come by Swartley on Friday to not only check out Hersey’s work in person but also meet the artist himself - and take a stab at silkscreening under his tutelage, too! Pizza will be served during the 20-minute gallery talk starting at 12:30 p.m., as it is the first half of lunch period. Those who would like to join the 8th graders in their silkscreen workshop with Hersey from 12:50-1:35 can bring a t-shirt on which to print their own limited edition shirt.
