slamD-E, Dwight-Englewood School's 1st Annual Poetry Slam Invitational, was held at the Bergen Performing Arts Center's Drapkin Cabaret Room on May 14th. The open mic for students ages 14 through 18 featured seven Upper School students, as well as one student from the Bergen County Academies (BCA): Rachna Agarwal '12, Victoria Azcuy '12, Daniel Garcia '13, Austin James '13, Avery Landau '13, Eric Miller '13, Kira Tsougarakis '14, and Daneile Scott of BCA.

"The slam was an amazing night full of poetry where students and teachers were encouraged to share pieces that were meaningful to them,
" explains Garcia, who also served as the event emcee. "It was an intimate experience where the Bergen PAC acted as a safe space for every voice. Furthermore, the real message of the evening stemmed from the word's ability to make a difference. Despite a small crowd and small space, each piece served as a medium for the poet to convey a part of his/her soul... [which] was appreciated by everyone in the audience."

"We can't wait to start on working on next year's event as soon as possible, and not only opening up the event to different schools in other counties, but also "packing" the bergenPAC,"
he added.

"We plan to make it bigger next year and extend to other counties," echoed MS Performing Arts drama teacher Carla Moriarty, who helped facilitate. "The slam was a great experience for [all of us]... [the students] even made me perform!"

The performers were also praised by Upper School English teacher Vicky Frankel: "Congrats to all for an enlightening evening. You are very courageous to open your hearts and souls and share stories about important and personal issues. BRAVO!"
