A D-E film screening today of the film "Contagion" will help support students headed to Peru for an exciting service learning trip later this summer.
Students registered for D-E's World Challenge Trip will show the film today at 4:00 p.m. in Hajjar Auditorium, to help support a trip centered on aiding student-aged children in a rural Peruvian community. The trip is being offered through D-E's Summer Connections International Program. The student "Challengers" organizing the screening are suggesting a $5 donation at the door, and will also provide food for purchase. All proceeds from the screening today will support the students' service work while in Peru.
Morgan Withrow, Middle School Science faculty member and the lead advisor for the trip, explains further: "World Challenge expeditions are unique because they are student-led. (Our student) Challengers (will) take on all the day-to-day responsibilities, including planning their own itinerary for their Peru trip, spending time volunteering in a developing community and trekking through challenging terrain. (The intent) is for World Challenge students (to) come back with a different perspective on life as they 'knew' it."
Student Shereen Al-Sawwaf, one of the "Challengers" going on the trip this summer, added the following: "I first heard about (the World Challenge) trip last spring when Ms. Withrow pitched the idea to us in 8th grade Homebase (advisory group). At once I wanted to go, not just for the opportunity to go to Peru and experience Peru but for the community service aspect. Sometimes I feel we get so wrapped up in our own individual lives that we just have to take a step back and look at the big picture. My hope is that through traveling to Peru and working at (a) Peruvian school, we will be able to do that as well as be able to learn about a culture very different than ours."
She continues, "We will be teaching English and helping out at the school, but I feel that this will be more of a learning experience for all of us. Through learning and interacting with the kids there, I want to be able to experience living a life that is truly different from mine, and from that I think we all can gain a sense of appreciation not found anywhere else."
"We collectively decided that we wanted to raise money to buy supplies for the Peruvian school we will be working at this summer. Instead of having the traditional bake sale, we all thought that a movie screening would be more unique. The money we raise is actually going to be hand-delivered to the school by us through the purchase of supplies... (we) will be able to physically see the reactions of the children and how our fundraising has helped the school. This movie screening is a great opportunity for people to come together and watch a movie while raising money (for a deserving cause)."
