Election Assembly Welcomes Party Reps to D-E

Organized by Spectrum, the D-E student-run Upper School newspaper, D-E hosted an Upper School Election Assembly earlier today, in which representatives from four different parties gathered: Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Green Party.

The four local candidates participating included Karlito Almeda, Democratic Candidate for Mahwah Town Council; Giancarlo Ghione, Executive Director of Bergen County Republicans; Peter Rohrman, Candidate for Bergen County Freeholder (Libertarian); and Erika Jacho, Candidate for Belleville School Board (Green Party).

Introduced by the Editor-in-Chiefs of Spectrum, Elizabeth Drew Maline ’17 and Julia McSpirit Beckett ’17, the four representatives received a warm welcome in Schneck Auditorium. D-E students Oliver Oz ’17 and Jacob Waxman ’17 joined in as well to field questions ranging from current policy issues such as same-sex marriage, gun ownership, and the war on drugs, to commenting on the current presidential candidates, and expanding as to why the third party presence is weak in US elections.

After the Q&A, each party representative had a chance to give a brief statement, which included insights into the candidates' unique backgrounds.  All spoke to how their personal experiences shaped their political views, and all encouraged our students to stay informed and be engaged, reminding the D-E community that decisions that are made today by the government can endure.
