D-E Profiles

Adrian Evans '17

Englewood-born, Hackensack-raised Adrian Evans '17 came to D-E in the sixth grade, which is why he says, prior to discussing his D-E tenure, “I like to think of myself as a half-Lifer since I have attended Dwight since the middle school.”

The Harlem Renaissance with Ms. Christian is definitely my favorite class this semester, and one of the best classes I have taken at Dwight. I always knew about the Harlem Renaissance, but I never had a chance to truly appreciate the works from that time. I have had the pleasure of reading poems and stories from the likes of Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B Du Bois, and Langston Hughes. All of these authors deliver messages by weaving profound ideas into everyday instances and occurrences in a way that I have never seen before.

Spanish 3H with Señora Kanter was one of the most interesting classes I have taken at Dwight. Reading the stories of Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez left me in awe. I could learn about infinite circles and magical realism forever. The ideas in the stories force you to question what is real and what isn’t, and the conversations we had about reality are some of the most interesting and captivating talks I have had in a class here at D-E.

My favorite teacher at Dwight is Ms. Young. I have had the privilege of having her as an advisor once and [an art] teacher in four out of my six years at Dwight. She has not only been a prominent figure in my school career, but also one of the most influential people in my life. She pushes all of her students to new limits, and finds time to help them all individually, even when they are all calling out, “Ms. Young, I need help!” There are few teachers who change a student’s mindset about a class, but countless times, I have seen a student go into one of her classes wanting nothing to do with art and ending up loving it. She finds a way to spark something in all of us that leaves us wanting to create more and more. She has been there for me throughout my whole time at Dwight, and I am truly blessed to have her as a mentor and a friend.

My favorite sport - and yes it is a sport for all of the naysayers - is Ultimate Frisbee. I have never felt closer to teammates than I have on the Ultimate team. We are all like brothers on and off of the field. We always have each other’s backs and we play for each other. It is easier to give 100% when you know the person next to you is giving it their all, too. I think that is why we have enjoyed so much success over the past two seasons, and I am looking forward to making this season even better than the last one.

A typical day at D-E involves hanging out with my best friend Emmanuel 'Manny' Jimenez '17. We have been inseparable since the seventh grade, and it’s great to know that I have someone who will always have my back. If I am not hanging out with Manny and the guys, then I am usually down in Swartley working on my ceramics pieces.

I entered junior year focused on my grades. I knew that I had always done well, but I wanted to push myself to do even better. I wanted my grades to be an accurate reflection of my capabilities in class. I think that by giving more effort, I can achieve my goals, so this year, I was determined to put my best foot forward all of the time, even when I really did not want to. Hard work pays off, and this year, more than most, is a year that I knew would be full of challenges - and I came into it looking forward to tackling all of them.

My best experience at D-E has been the annual eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. Learning about important documents that are responsible for creating our nation is one thing, but to be in the presence of them and to explore our nation’s capital was a totally different experience altogether. The most important moment for me was seeing the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. I was not prepared for the feeling that I got there. It was a very empowering and enlightening experience. Reading all of the quotes around the monument really moved me. I was able to share this experience with so many of my friends, and I think that was one of the experiences that brought us, as a grade, closer together.
