Joel Lee '17

As a student who has been enrolled in all three divisions at Dwight-Englewood School, Joel Lee ’17 is a “D-E Lifer.” Hailing from the ‘boro of Palisade Park, NJ, Joel was recently honored during Commencement for the Class of 2017 as this year’s winner of the Senior Citizenship Prize. Joel will be attending NYU next year.

Through Middle School coursework, Joel began to develop his love of the arts, and in particular, ceramics and spoken word performance. As a senior, he spent time in the Swartley Art Gallery’s ceramics room each day. During one of his scheduled ‘free’ periods, he would help out with Ms. Young’s seventh grade ceramic class. He shares, “I became the unofficial teacher’s assistant. I loved being an engaging presence in the room, and I always looked forward to seeing the 7’s. During other ‘frees’, I still spent time in the ceramics room either working on my own projects, or just hanging out with my friends.”

As for his passion for spoken word composition and performance, Joel said it all began in his eighth grade drama class. “I wrote about subways and the number of stories in any given subway car,” he comments. “From that point, I’ve watched countless spoken word poetry and have continued to make poems about my experience. I’ve been a leader of the spoken word club, Dwight Mic, and I’ve been able to craft and refine my pieces. I’m humbled when I receive feedback about my spoken word performances.”

Joel’s love for spoken word culminated in his reading of “The Paradox” by poet Sarah Kay during Commencement 2017.  To learn more about the arts at D-E click here or visit www.d-e.org/arts
