Presenting Our New Club Team: Ice Hockey

We are proud to present our new Bulldog Ice Hockey Club! A new Upper School club sport, the Bulldogs have had not just one but two victorious games in a row!  The Bulldogs’ first game was against Fieldston at the Mackay Arena. With the score tied 4-4, the team came together toward the very end to achieve a 6-4 win!

The Bulldogs had their second match against Columbia Grammar & Preparatory on Thursday (12/14) at City Ice. In a close game, the Bulldogs came out victorious with a score of 6-4! We can’t wait until the new year for their next game (stay tuned for schedule details!). Congrats on a strong start for a brand new club sport! Go Bulldogs!

About Activities & Clubs

For students in all three divisions at D-E, opportunities abound in terms of extra-curricular activities and clubs. A description of clubs and activities by division is noted below. D-E students and their families can learn more about D-E activities, student-led events, programs, fundraisers, and more, when visiting activities.d-e.org; LogIn to MyD-E is required for access. For help Email help@d-e.org
We believe clubs play a significant role in the development of our students.  Clubs allow for students to explore their passions outside of academics and to gain leadership skills.

In Middle School, clubs provide opportunities for students to discover and pursue their particular abilities, talents and interests.  They also encourage students to find their voice, make choices and take leadership roles in areas of interest to them.  Finally, because our clubs are open to all grades within each division, students learn to work with the D-E community.

In Upper School, opportunities expand exponentially.  We view extra curricular involvement as opportunities for students to grow personally and develop critical leadership skills while pursuing areas of interest, or perhaps curiosity.  In the structure of our Upper School schedule, students are able to engage in various areas of interest ranging from music to community service to robotics.

Calliope 2023: A Crown Finalist!

We have fantastic news. Calliope, our Upper School English-language literary/arts magazine, received a Crown award for last spring’s issue from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association!

This is the sixth time in our school’s history to receive this award. Previous “Crowns” were awarded in 1982, 1993, 2011, 2014, and 2016! The award is a huge honor; it represents recognition on a national level, with only a few dozen scholastic and collegiate magazines honored with Crowns out of + 1,000 entries.

Congratulations to our Calliope 2023 student writers and artists, Calliope club members, student editors’ Sabrina Lu ’23, Lexi Trokhan ’23, & Arsh Vohra ’23, and advisor Mr. Steve Petkus. The 2023 editors and Mr. Petkus will attend the awards presentation in the spring at Columbia University, where we'll find out whether our Crown is Gold or Silver. Featured here is the Calliope 2023 front cover with original artwork entitled “Jungle” by Sally Kim ‘23.

  • Lower School

In the Lower School, students engage in intramural sports, beginning in third grade, as well as in a third-through-fifth grade chorus, strings, and band program. The Planeteers is a weekly environmental focus club led by Science teacher Beth Lemire.  LS children at all grade levels may also engage in enrichment classes through D-E Explorers, our after-school care program, which manages other after school activities including Chess, Chinese, and more.

  • Middle School

In Middle School, cocurricular activities include Continental Math League, Cultural Diversity Club, Debate Club, Drawing Club, Environmental Action Club, Makers of Tomorrow (a community-service organization), Open Roads (Middle School literary magazine), The Dwightee (Middle School newspaper), Middle School Play/Musical, Science Club, Stage Crew, and Student Government. In the Upper School, the cocurricular opportunities expand exponentially (see below).

  • Upper School

Within the Upper School, we are dedicated to providing an environment that promotes learning in diverse ways about a complex, dynamic world. We view cocurricular involvement as opportunities for students to grow personally and develop critical leadership skills. In the structure of our Upper School schedule, we allow students to choose to be engaged in many areas of interest ranging from intramural sports to fine arts-related clubs.

Most clubs and activities meet during our hour-long lunch period, during which no academic classes are scheduled.  To download a PDF of the clubs schedule for 2016-2017 clubs click here.

Students in the Upper School may also elect to take advantage of learning experiences in Europe and Asia. Through the D-E 360° International Program many D-E students study and complete service in countries in Western Europe, South and Central America, Africa, and elsewhere.
