Technology is a critical part of the educational experience at Dwight Englewood. At D-E we believe that students learn most effectively when they can construct meaning from the world around them, and we believe that technology enables them to do this in very special ways.
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into our daily lives, we are taking thoughtful steps to guide students in using it ethically, responsibly, and developmentally appropriate.
A "Student Guidelines for Using AI on Assignments Checklist" was developed through a collaborative process that included feedback from Faculty and Staff across Divisions, Department Chairs, and Upper School students serving on the Student Committee on AI. Their insights helped shape a framework that reflects our shared commitment to learning, integrity, and growth. We aim to strike a thoughtful balance: giving students opportunities to engage with emerging AI tools, while preserving the cognitive and creative work essential for long-term learning.
For the remainder of this school year 2024-'25, Lower School leadership has decided not to introduce AI tools in younger grades as we continue to assess the impact of generative technology on brain development during these foundational years. This cautious approach reflects our commitment to developmental appropriateness and long-term student well-being.
