First Grade

Music

Instructor: Mary Heveran

Students attend music class twice a week for 30 minutes each time. Basic skills and concepts such as steady beat, rhythm and pitch are reinforced using body percussion, drums, and other hand held instruments.
 
Students are also introduced to the music and biographies of famous composers such as Bach, Handel, Haydn and Mozart.  Students learn about singing in a group as well as singing alone.  Materials relating to the core curriculum areas are incorporated into the music curriculum.  Students learn to appreciate the music of various cultures through song, dance, and listening.  Students prepare for a concert held each year on Valentine’s Day.  They also perform for “Grandparents’ and Special Friends Day” In preparation for our annual trip to hear the NJ Symphony Orchestra, students are taught about the four families of instruments, the role of the conductor, and audience etiquette.
